The Republic of Singapore is expected to enhance cooperation with Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam in developing a smart city, according to Consulate General of the Republic of Singapore in Ho Chi Minh City Ms. Leow Siu Lin. She said this while hosting the 53rd Singapore National Day anniversary in Ho Chi Minh City on August 3.
Mr. Huynh Cach Mang, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee and many other guests were at the anniversary.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Lin said there is a good mutual relationship between Vietnam and Singapore and that the two countries are close partners in the ASEAN bloc. The relationship between the two sides has been built in many aspects and has included many visits by high-ranking leaders to both countries.
The Framework Agreement on Vietnam-Singapore Connectivity, which was signed in December 2005, has been an effective foundation for strengthening the economic cooperation between the two sides.
Singapore was Vietnam’s sixth largest trading partner in 2017 with bilateral trade reaching $21.6 billion. Singapore was also the third largest foreign investor in Vietnam with registered cumulative investments of $43.5 billion.
Ms. Lin emphasized her desire to cooperate with the city’s authorities in developing a smart city. Singapore can share many experiences on this with regards to urban planning and e-government.
As the chair of ASEAN this year, one of Singapore’s main proposals is the establishment of the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN). The network is expected to be the cooperative foundation that ASEAN cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hanoi strive for a common goal - smart and sustainable urban development.
"We hope that over time, this network will help improve urban living environments and enhance business opportunities for the more than 630 million people in the ASEAN region," said Ms. Lin.
“To celebrate Singapore National Day, as well as the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Singapore, we express our hopes that our two countries will continue developing this friendship and solid partnership for many years to come,” Ms. Lin added. “I hope that everyone will take the time to remember the country's development journey, continue to do good deeds, and build our relationship with our Vietnamese friends.”
