What Will It Take for Workers to Demand Raises?

After a decade of almost no inflation, workers aren’t used to seeing their earnings eaten away by higher prices. At some point, they will realize they are getting poorer every month and demand healthy raises.

The consumer-price index was up 2.9% over the past year, the Labor Department said Friday, while core prices, which exclude food and energy, increased 2.4%. The broad inflation gauge had one of its biggest gains of the past decade and core prices rose by the most since September 2008.
