A book fair featuring works by authors from all over Europe will begin this weekend at the Ho Chi Minh City Book Street, with a number of titles on sale at discounted prices and a variety of activities and exchanges.
The 2018 European Book Days, formerly known as the European Literature Days, will take place on Nguyen Van Binh Street in District 1 from May 13 to 20.
A similar event, also jointly organized by the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) and European countries’ embassies in Vietnam, is ongoing in Hanoi from May 5 to 12.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the fair will be attended by nine nations - Austria, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, the Czech Republic, Spain, Sweden, and Italy - and the Wallonia-Brussels delegation, which represents the French community of Belgium.
On the opening morning on May 13, the event will start with a talk, themed under European literature and cinema and hosted by local Tre Publishing House, featuring Vietnamese journalist and film critic Le Hong Lam, alongside book translator Hoang Anh.
On the same day, Belgian artist Estelle Meens will take the stage to introduce her children’s book series to Vietnamese readers.
The following days will be highlighted with continuous events by local publisher First News, which will present translated works on the topic of Scandinavian lifestyles including The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living, Lagom: The Swedish Art of Balanced Living, and Sisu: The Finnish Art of Courage.
Interspersed between those activities are the book launch of The Life of the Bee by Belgian Nobel winner Maurice Maeterlinck, and a workshop on the French anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss and his approach to interpreting literature from an anthropological perspective.
Discounts from 20 to 30 percent and special gifts will be available for books by European writers on sale during the event.
On the eve of the opening of the European Book Days, the Vietnamese translation of Revolution, a book by French President Emmanuel Macron, will be released in Vietnam.
The book launch ceremony will be held at Nguyen Van Binh Book Street at 9:00 am on May 12.
First launched in France in May 2016, Revolution shows the faith, vision, will and the story of the democratic revolution that the French president persistently pursues.
